Master of Public Health Degree

The MPH program may be completed as a full-time or part-time student. Students can choose one or both of our concentrations:

Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or better in the last 60 hours of undergraduate studies. There are no prerequisites to apply for the MPH program.

Applications open in August and close in April. Review of verified applications begins mid-January.

Full-time MPH applicants may apply for admission only to the fall semester.

Part-time students may enter any time during the academic year after consultation with the MPH Program Director. 

Application Process

1. Submit SOPHAS Application

All MPH applicants must submit the required application materials on the SOPHAS application.

  • Application fees are non-refundable
  • SOPHAS offers a limited number of fee waivers on a first-come, first-served basis for applicants who meet eligibility criteria.   

2. Pay the Virginia Tech Graduate School Supplemental Application Fee

All MPH applicants must submit the supplemental application fee through the Virginia Tech Graduate School Supplemental Application Fee Portal via QuickPay

  • Application fees are non-refundable
  • Application fee waivers are available for eligible MPH applicants.  
    • Complete the waiver request form found on the Graduate School Application Fees page before paying the supplemental application fee
    • If approved, forward your waiver confirmation to phs@vt.edu.

Required Application Materials

Personal Statement

Your statement should be 800 words and address the following: 

  • What interests and excites you about public health? 
  • How have your life experiences related to public health? Don’t limit yourself to your resume. 
  • Why did you choose the specific Virginia Tech MPH concentration(s)? 
  • Why do you believe resiliency is an important attribute to have while participating in an educational program and for life after graduation? Provide examples of how you have exhibited resilience and what you learned.

Resume or CV

Submit your Resume or CV in PDF format. Include all employment, experiences, internships, both volunteer and paid. 

Transcripts

Include official transcripts from all institutions where you completed undergraduate and graduate courses. 

For non-U.S./Canadian (English-speaking) academic transcripts, applicants should not send transcripts to SOPHAS. Applicants should email non-English speaking official transcripts and certified translated transcripts to phs@vt.edu.

Letters of Recommendation

Three academic or professional letters of recommendation from a variety of sources including academic, professional/volunteer experience.

TOEFL or IELTS

Students who attended university in a non-English speaking institution must submit a language test (TOEFL or IELTS). Please visit the Graduate School's website for more information.
